What kind of containers are used for homes?
Aug 08, 2023There are various types of containers that are used for building homes, commonly known as shipping container homes or container architecture. These containers are typically repurposed from large shipping containers made of steel, the walls and roof are sandwich panels. The filling material of the sandwich panel can be rock wool or EPS.
Here are some popular container types used for homes:
Standard Containers
The most common containers used for homes are standard ISO shipping containers. These are often available in two standard sizes: 20 feet long (6 meters) and 40 feet long (12 meters). They are designed to be stacked and transported by ships, trucks, and trains.
High Cube Containers
High Cube Containers come in two sizes: 40ft HC and 45ft HC. Since these containers have additional height, they provide more storage value at their price point. They're suitable if you need more storage for your cargo that a 20ft or 40ft container can't fulfil.
Open-Side Containers
Open-side containers have one or more sides with bi-fold doors that can be fully opened to create a large open space. These containers are often used when the design requires a wider and unobstructed interior.
Open-Top Containers
Open-top containers have removable roofs, allowing for vertical access to the container's interior. They are occasionally used for homes that require larger openings or if there is a need to emphasize natural light.
Reefer Containers
Reefer containers, short for refrigerated containers, are insulated and equipped with cooling systems for transporting temperature-sensitive goods. They offer additional insulation, which can be advantageous in extreme climates.
These containers are relatively easy to acquire, structurally strong, durable, and can be modified and repurposed into comfortable living spaces. They have gained popularity due to their affordability, modular nature, eco-friendliness (by reusing shipping containers), and the ability to construct homes quickly.
